About Us
from the president
Founded in 1899, the Animal Rescue League of Boston is dedicated to rescuing domesticated animals and wildlife from suffering, cruelty, abandonment and neglect. Our work is carried out by a dedicated staff of 70 animal care providers, 400 volunteers and is supported each year by more than 24,000 donors.
As you navigate the pages of this website you will come to appreciate that the Animal Rescue League of Boston is a vibrant humane organization that responds to the ever changing needs of animals and their human companions. I like to point out that in 1899, when women still did not have the right to vote, Boston native Anna Harris Smith had the vision, courage and dedication to establish this organization. As founder and second president (1901-1929) Mrs. Smith created the blue print which has resulted in the Animal Rescue League of Boston having a leadership role regionally, nationally and internationally in efforts that protect and advance the wellbeing of animals.
I want to share with you a passage from our founder’s writings which inspires me as I carry out my responsibilities as the seventh president….The great need in this world is kindness. If we can teach the young the duty of thoughtful kindness, we are benefiting not only the family but the neighborhood, the city, the state, the country.
